Abraham G (Bram) Hartzema is Professor and Eminent Scholar Emeritus in the UF College of Pharmacy. He grew up in The Hague, the Netherlands, and graduated with a doctorate in Pharmacy from the University of Utrecht. He subsequently received a Fulbright Fellowship to study at the University of Washington and then completed a PhD at the University of Minnesota. He served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for over 20 years as full professor where he established the program in pharmacoepidemiology. He was then recruited by the University of Florida as the first Perry A. Foote endowed, eminent scholar chair, which he held until his retirement in June 2016. He was co-Principal Investigator of the Observational Medical Outcome Partners, a five-year public-private partnership between academia, the US FDA, and the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. After his retirement he was Principal Investigator for 2001-2002 on a NIH-NIDA study developing an intervention to prevent opioid abuse. He serves as Chief Scientific Officer of SureMed Compliance LLC, a startup resulting from the NIH grant with the mission to combat opioid abuse.
His latest book, Post-Authorization Safety Studies of Medicinal Products: The PASS Book, was co-edited with former graduate student, Dr. Ayad Ali, and was translated in December 2022 into Japanese. He serves in addition as Chief Scientific Officer of 3ARx Solutions, a startup that consults on outcome assessment in orphan drug studies. His youngest, adopted daughter attends the University of South Florida.
