Travel and Photography

The Fall 2026 meeting of the RFUF Travel and Photography Interest Group got off to a lively start on September 21 at the home of Dawn Bowers and Rus Bauer, who treated the group to coffee and sweets. Martha Monroe and her panel – Wayne Smith, Mitzi Austin, and Suzi Graham – led an engaging and informative discussion about Road Scholar, sharing their various travel experiences from many years of participation, both nationally and internationally. Most recently, Martha returned from a 2-week Road Scholar adventure traipsing around Newfoundland from St. Johns to L’Anse aux Meadows, the only confirmed 1000-year-old Norse settlement in North America. Others contributed their own perspectives, positive and negative, including David and Sharon Kosboth and the D’Alli’s, and the group discussed and compared similar travel organizations like Go Ahead, Nat Geo, Caravan, and Tauck. Kerry Estes shared her positive experiences as a solo traveler. Finally, Rus Bauer described bringing back 82 pounds of flash frozen fish as checked luggage from a remote wilderness lodge in the Kodiak archipelago. The next meeting of this group will be held October 26, 2026, from 10 AM to noon at the home of Paul and Christine Gibbs. The program will focus on ancestry travel and photography, including ways to digitize negatives and optimize old photographs. Ralf Remshardt and Stan Kaye will lead the discussion.
